Yarn maths, done properly

The Yarn Logic Pro is a precision calculator for knitters and crocheters worldwide. Unlike basic estimators, it uses Stitch Geometry to account for texture complexity, craft type differences, and your personal gauge — so your estimate is accurate before you buy a single skein.

With global metric/imperial support, yarn substitution logic, garment ease options, and an automatic safety buffer, you'll get the right number every time. A built-in Buttonhole Spacing Calculator is included for garment makers who need perfectly distributed buttons.

Feature Function Global Use
Unit Toggle Swap between Metric (m/g) and Imperial (yd/oz) Essential for EU/UK/US markets
Standard Sizes Pre-set dimensions for S through 5XL and baby sizes Fits all body types
The Texture Tax Applies multipliers for Cables, Bobbles & more Precision for advanced makers
Skein Rounder Calculates "Balls to Buy" (always rounds up) Practical shopping list output
Gauge Adjuster Tweaks math if your tension is loose or tight Professional accuracy
Buttonhole Spacing Alternating gap distribution for button bands Perfect button placement

Pro Tip: Always buy one extra skein if dye lots vary. The buffer covers swatches and minor fixes — but dye lot variance is a separate risk.

Buttonhole Spacing Calculator

Keeps stitch math correct and distributes gap sizes in a nice alternating pattern like 8, 7, 8, 7, 8 instead of grouping all larger gaps together.

If unchecked, spacing is distributed as (buttons + 1) spaces.

How The Yarn Logic Pro works

Four layers of calculation combine to give you an accurate, personalised estimate every time.

1
Base Yardage Database

Industry-standard base estimates for 11 project types across all sizes, from baby newborn to 5XL adult.

2
Stitch Geometry Tax

Texture multipliers from 1.0× (stockinette) up to 1.45× (sculptural bobbles) account for extra yarn consumed by complex stitches.

3
Gauge & Ease Correction

Your personal gauge versus the pattern gauge is squared to correct for tension differences. Ease multipliers adjust for fit style.

4
Safety Buffer & Substitution

A mandatory 10% buffer is always added. Optional extra buffer and yarn substitution balls-to-buy logic complete the calculation.

About The Yarn Logic Pro

The Yarn Logic Pro is a free browser-based tool designed for knitters and crocheters who want accurate yardage estimates before they head to the yarn shop. Whether you're planning a chunky cable-knit sweater, a delicate lace shawl, or a cosy baby blanket, the calculator takes your specific project size, stitch texture, gauge, and ease preferences into account.

Unlike basic estimators that apply a single flat figure per project type, The Yarn Logic Pro uses a multi-factor model. The Stitch Geometry system recognises that cables and bobbles can use up to 45% more yarn than plain stockinette — a difference that can mean several extra skeins on a large adult garment. The gauge correction squares the ratio between pattern gauge and your personal tension, which is mathematically correct and significantly more accurate than a linear adjustment.

A built-in Buttonhole Spacing Calculator rounds out the tool for garment makers, distributing stitches in an alternating pattern so button bands look professional. All calculations happen entirely in your browser — nothing is sent to any server.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the yardage estimate?
Very accurate for standard projects. The calculator uses a multi-factor model: base yardage by size, Stitch Geometry texture multipliers, squared gauge correction, ease multipliers, and a safety buffer. For unusual constructions or heavily modified patterns, add extra buffer using the slider.
Why does crochet need more yarn than knitting?
Crochet uses a 1.3× multiplier because the craft typically consumes around 30% more yarn than an equivalent knitted fabric. This is due to the taller stitch height and the way yarn wraps around the hook multiple times per stitch.
What is the Stitch Geometry Tax?
Stitch Geometry is the system that accounts for how texture complexity changes yarn consumption. Baseline stockinette uses 1.0× (no extra). Volume textures like garter or ribbing use 1.1×. Structural stitches like cables use 1.25×. Sculptural work like bobbles and popcorn stitches use 1.45×.
How does gauge correction work?
The calculator divides your pattern gauge by your personal gauge and squares the result. If you knit tighter than the pattern (more stitches per inch), your gauge factor will be below 1, reducing the estimate. If you knit looser, it increases. Squaring the ratio captures the two-dimensional nature of fabric area accurately.
What does the buttonhole alternating pattern mean?
When you have leftover stitches that don't divide evenly into gaps, the calculator distributes the extra stitches in an alternating pattern — for example, 8, 7, 8, 7, 8 — instead of grouping all larger gaps at one end. This gives button bands a more professional and balanced appearance.
Can I use this for yarn substitution?
Yes. Enter the length per ball of your substitute yarn in the main calculator fields, and enter the original pattern yarn's length per ball in the Yarn Substitution field. The calculator will tell you how many balls of each you need.
